AI Is Finding Flaws Faster Than Anyone Can Patch Them: Why Detection Is Now Foundational

Something changed this year, and the PHP2Shell flaws were a clear signal of it. AI is now being used to find vulnerabilities in software—old and new—at a pace human research never could. Bugs that might have sat undiscovered for years are being surfaced in days, and the window between a flaw becoming known and a flaw being exploited keeps shrinking.

That shifts the ground under how security actually works. For a long time the goal was to keep attackers out: patch fast, harden everything, build a higher wall. That still matters. But when flaws appear faster than any team can realistically patch them, the wall can no longer be the whole plan.

Prevention still matters—it just can’t keep pace alone

Let’s be clear: prevention is not dead. Patching, hardening, MFA, backups and good configuration are still the foundation, and skipping them is negligent. The problem isn’t that prevention stopped working. It’s that the volume and speed of new vulnerabilities has outrun the processes most organisations use to apply it.

Here’s the part most won’t say out loud: nobody can promise you’ll never be breached. If someone’s selling you “unbreakable,” they’re selling peace of mind, not protection. Give it enough time and enough new flaws, and something eventually slips through. The businesses that come through it okay aren’t the ones who never got hit—they’re the ones who noticed fast.

Why AI changes the maths

Vulnerability discovery used to be rate-limited by skilled human effort. AI removes that limit. It can read enormous amounts of code, reason about edge cases, and surface weaknesses across widely used software that everything else is built on. The result is more flaws, found faster, in more places—including the dependencies and platforms you don’t control.

Your patching cycle, however, is still bounded by change windows, testing, vendor timelines and the hours in a day. That gap—between how fast flaws appear and how fast they can be closed—is widening. You cannot patch what you don’t yet know is broken.

Detection assumes the breach will happen

Detection is the control that accepts this reality. Instead of only trying to stop every intrusion, it asks a sharper question: if someone gets in, how fast will we see them?

Modern intrusions rarely trip an obvious alarm. Attackers use valid credentials, legitimate tools and stolen sessions, and move slowly to blend in. There’s often no “known bad” to match—just activity that shouldn’t be happening by an identity that technically checks out. Catching that means watching behaviour and knowing what normal looks like, then flagging the moment something deviates. The measure that matters is no longer just whether you were breached, but how long it took you to know.

How Eviant helps

SensorZero is Eviant’s intel-driven, agentic threat detection and response platform. Rather than watching only for known attack patterns, it builds a picture of what normal looks like across your endpoints and identities, and surfaces the signals of an intrusion as they happen—an impossible-travel sign-in, a new authenticator added right after a reset, a process doing something it never does—pulled together into one alert written in plain language, not a pile of logs to decode at 2am.

SensorZero takes the headache out of all this. Instead of building and running your own security team, you let Eviant watch for the signals of a breach for you—so you catch it early, not hear about it from your customers.
